Asbestos Poisoning

Asbestos poisoning is a serious threat to human health and can lead to asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, a rare but deadly form of cancer that affects the lining of the lung, heart and abdominal organ cavities.

Where can asbestos poisoning occur?
Asbestos poisoning can occur in many environments but is most common in the workplace and the home. People in the following occupations are at the greatest risk of asbestos poisoning:

  • Construction workers, including building, renovation, and demolition teams
  • People employed in the shipping industry (including naval workers, longshoremen, dock workers, mates, and more)
  • Automotive technicians
  • Electricians
  • Telephone workers
  • Factory workers
  • Maintenance workers

In addition to the workplace, asbestos poisoning can also occur in the home. For example, over one hundred documented cases of mesothelioma have been linked to asbestos poisoning in family members of those working in professions where they are exposed to asbestos. Workers can bring asbestos fibers home with them on their person or property.

Asbestos poisoning can also happen in the home when asbestos containing materials (widely used to build homes and apartments) become compromised.

How does asbestos poisoning occur?
Asbestos poisoning occurs when people are exposed to damaged or otherwise compromised asbestos containing materials. When these materials are compromised, they release tiny particles into the air, which can then be inhaled or ingested by people nearby. Over time, exposure to asbestos can lead to the accumulation of these fibers in the body. This can lead to serious injuries, including cancer.
