Mesothelioma in Veterans

Mesothelioma in veterans is a serious concern today, as many people who faithfully served our country are now developing serious diseases such as mesothelioma because of exposure to hazardous substance during service. Asbestos is the primary cause of mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that attacks the lining of the heart, lungs, and/or abdominal organs. An estimated 10 million people have been exposed to this dangerous fibrous material in their homes or places of employment since the 1940s alone.

Untold Numbers of Veterans Exposed
Thousands upon thousands of US military personnel have been exposed to the dangers of asbestos exposure during the scope of their service. For example, Navy shipyard workers—including boiler room workers, shipbuilders, longshoremen, machinists, machine repairmen, and dock workers—were likely exposed to asbestos, since it was used in myriad applications in military shipping operations. Some findings show that asbestos was used more frequently in naval operations than any other military operations.

Wartime Service
Mesothelioma in veterans of takes years—20 to 50 years, in fact—to appear following hazardous exposure to asbestos during military service. Thus, those who served in the military between 1940 and 1970 are at significant risk of developing the signs and symptoms of mesothelioma today.

People have known of the occupational hazards associated with asbestos exposure since the early 1900s. However, this risk was not acted upon until the 1970s, when the government finally stepped in to regulate the its use. In all its years of use, asbestos was highly prized for its insulating, fire and sound-proofing, and durable characteristics. Many asbestos containing products were developed for use by the military, especially during wartime.

Veterans’ Families at Risk
Unfortunately the risk of mesothelioma in veterans is also a risk shared by their family members. Military personnel who came into contact with asbestos on the job ran the risk of carrying the fibers home on their person or belongings, posing a threat of asbestos exposure to those at home. At least 100 people have developed mesothelioma because of asbestos exposure via a family member.

Help for Veterans with Mesothelioma
The risks of mesothelioma were long known by the military before the government intervened in its widespread use. Many speculate that the military did not warn service members because they didn’t think they could be held liable for diseases, such as mesothelioma, that developed so long after the initial period of exposure.

Sadly, the US Department of Veteran Affairs does not recognize mesothelioma in veterans, despite the fact that an estimated 30 percent of those who develop mesothelioma do so after serving in the military.
